  1. 1906-1965. US sculptor and painter, whose
  2. work made a lasting impact on sculpture after
  3. World War II. He trained as a steel welder in
  4. a car factory. His pieces are large openwork
  5. metal abstracts. Smith turned first to
  6. painting and then, about 1930, to sculpture.
  7. Using welded steel, he created abstract
  8. structures influenced by the metal sculptures
  9. of Picasso. In the 1940s and 1950s he
  10. developed a more linear style. The Cubi
  11. series of totemlike abstracts, some of them
  12. painted, was designed to be placed in the
  13. open air.
